Homemade Snowflake Marshmallows

Some of my favorite holiday memories have happened around the fireplace in our living room at my parent’s home. We have a wood burning fire place and it seemed every weekend in the winter we would start a fire. I just loved the smell of the wood, how the fire looked and the sound of the wood cracking. The memory made me very nostalgic for my family and home. This will be the first Thanksgiving at my in-laws. While I am excited to be celebrating with my new family, I am going to miss my family in NY.

To try and get myself out of my little pity party I decided to make one of my favorite comfort foods hot chocolate and marshmallows. I love hot chocolate, it just makes you feel warm all over and the milk (I like to think) makes it healthy. The best part are the marshmallows on top, they get all gooey and soft from the hot chocolate. There is nothing better in the world.

So I decided to make my own homemade marshmallows. It was so easy!!! I made them while waiting for my husband to finish walking the dog so we could go to the store. The one trick about marshmallows is some non-stick cooking spray. Spray the spatula you use to smooth out the mixture and any cookie cutters you use. Also you must make sure to mix equal amounts of powered sugar and corn starch and sprinkle them over the marshmallows to ensure they don’t stick together when you place them in storage. They were so easy and good I can’t wait to try different variations and flavors. People are so impressed when you make your own marshmallows little do they know how easy they are.

A look at the marshmallows on the baking sheet before they harden.

A close up of the finised marshmallows. They looked so cute.

It makes alot, which is good becasue they were a HUGE hit with the entire family (both sides).

  4. Really great! I am going to make these this year, as part of a homemade hot chocolate and marshmallow gift box. Do you know how long they keep, or how long yours stayed fresh? I wouldn't want to make them too soon and have them get stale. Thanks! :)

  5. Ashley - I kept them for three weeks in an air tight container. However, they did start to get hard around the edges at the end of the third week. Good Luck!!

  6. I found you via your comment on Alton's- Food Network recipe page for these awesome marshmallows. I have made these for the past 3 years for Christmas. I add mint extract and once in the pan I add drips of red food dye and streak it through the marshmallow mixture by zig zagging a knife through it. Once set I have usually cut them into squares and then dip them in melted premium dark chocolate. BUT now I see your super sweet snowflakes and I want to do that too! Thanks bunches for sharing-they will look so great in lil peppermint snowflake shapes! Merry Christmas-Happy Holidays!

  7. Thanks for the info. This is my first time making marshmallows. I mixed in a box of crushed candy canes. I thought I would get more red out of them but they give a subtle peppermint flavor. I think next time I will do the same and try to make rice crispy treats out of them.

  8. Thanks Erica! They turned out really great - I can't believe how easy and delicious they were. My only problem was that half the batch stuck to the inside of the bowl, but it made enough for what I needed :)
I made homemade hot cocoa to go along with them! http://www.indieprettyprojects.com/2010/12/homemade-hot-cocoa-mix-with.html
